Romania will be represented by prime minister Victor Ponta in the European Council to be held on Wednesday in Brussels. The main goals for the Romanian prime minister in the European Council include aligning Romania’s renewable energy policy with European standards, and regional energy interconnection. Ponta mentioned that one of the topics to be approached in Brussels will be a policy to protect vulnerable consumers, with Romania being one of its main beneficiaries.

Romania stands by its commitment to help strengthen a common energy policy, given the importance of this sector for the competitiveness and economic growth of the EU. The statement was made on Tuesday in Brussels by the Romanian foreign minister, Titus Corlăţean, who took part in the General Affairs Council meeting. He also said that Romania was open to revising the EU 2014-2020 budget in 2017, but without changing the amounts earmarked for member states. The national allocation for Romania for 2014-2020 is nearly 40 billion euros. Titus Corlăţean also expressed Romania’s support for measures to fight tax evasion and tax fraud.

Officials for Romania, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria and Turkey, partners in the Nabucco gas pipeline project, signed in Bucharest on Tuesday an agreement that lays down the terms and conditions for other investors to become shareholders in the pipeline consortium. Nabucco is an alternative route for shipping natural gas from Azerbaijan to the European market, and is designed to reduce the EU’s reliance on Russias natural gas. Holding 17% of the shares, Romania is an important partner in the development of the gas pipeline project.

US president Barack Obama Tuesday expressed solidarity with the victims of the Oklahoma tornado. The powerful tornado that struck Oklahoma City on Monday killed at least 24 people, according to a revised report by the local authorities. Over 100 people were rescued by search teams, while others are still missing.
