The Romanian Agriculture Ministry today organizes the seminar focusing on “The Future Common Agricultural Policy: Opportunities and Priorities for Romania.” Attending the event are the European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Dacian Ciolos and the Agriculture Minister Daniel Constantin. High on the seminar’s agenda are topics such as adapting Common Agricultural Policy’s intervention instruments to the Romanian context, with a view to supporting the country’s competitiveness for 2014-2020 as well analyzing the vulnerable sectors which need structural support.


The Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu in Cannes today will we awarded the title of Officer of the Arts and Letters Order. Bestowing the distinction will be the French Minister of Culture Aurelie Filipetti. In 2008 the Romanian filmmaker was awarded the Order of Arts and Letters in the Rank of Knight, also offered by the French government. Mungiu, who in 2007 scoped the Palme D’Or for his “ 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” has returned to the Cannes Film festival, this time as a member of the jury, led by Steven Spielberg. At the present edition of the festival, Romania has two short-reel films: Radu Jude’s “ Like a Shadow of a Cloud” in the “Quinzaine des Realisateurs” section and “In the Aquarium” by Tudor Giurgiu, in the festival’s “ Cinefondation” section.


The Romanian Justice Minister Robert Cazanciuc told a TV station that his top priority is to obtain a favorable report for the Justice sector of the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism. To that effect, Cazanciuc highlighted that the decision for Romania to gain admission to the Schengen area is a political one and admitted that a favorable report for the justice sector could only be in favor of the country. In another development, the Romanian Justice Minister sad that a new Insolvency Code will be remitted to the Government in July and subsequently to Parliament, as a draft law initiated by the Government. The draft law will be written jointly with the business sector.


The Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta today will be presenting the mandate President Basescu gave him and which credits Ponta to take part in the European Council summit on May the 22nd. High on the European summit’s agenda are such topics as the Nabucco project, identifying new sources of energy and providing energy security for the member states. The Constitutional Court in Bucharest last year took the decision that the president was entitled to represent Romania at the European summits.
