A Romanian Parliament delegation is attending the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, due to end of May 19th in Luxembourg. The main topics of discussion are the European integration of Georgia, the West Balkans and Afghanistan. Also on the agenda are non-conventional energy sources. The event is attended by ambassadors and MPs of NATO member countries. Leading the proceedings are NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the Prime Minister of the host country, Jean-Claude Junker, and NGO representatives.


On Friday, the Romanian National Radio Orchestra gave a special concert in Shanghai, at the Shanghai Spring International Music Festival. Under the baton of Tiberiu Soare, the concert included famous pieces by George Enescu, the Skylark, which is one of the most popular Romanian tunes among the Chinese audience, and also well-known international pieces. Participating in this years’ edition are artistic ensembles from 10 countries. The concert given by the Romanian orchestra was listened to by approximately one billion people, because on the occasion Radio Romania joined the Asia Pacific Broadcasting System, the Asian counterpart of the European Broadcasting Union.


On Monday in Cannes, the Romanian film-maker Cristian Mungiu will get the title of Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters. The distinction will be awarded by the French Minister of Culture, Aurelie Filippetti. In 2008, the Romanian director got, also from the French government, the order of Arts and letters in rank of knight. Winner of the Palme d’Or in 2007 with 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days, Mungiu is back in Cannes this year, but as member of the jury. At this edition of the Cannes Film Festival, Romania is represented by two short-reels: Shadow of a Cloud by Radu Jude, in the Quinzainne des Realisateurs section and In the Fish Tank by Tudor Jurgiu, in the Cinefondation section.


Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, ranked 64 in the WTA classification, on Friday qualified for the semifinals of the Rome tournament, with over 2.4 million dollars in prize money. In the quarters she beat 4-6, 6-love, 7-5 Jelena Jankovici from Serbia. In the semifinals Halep will met 1st ranked Serena Williams. Also at the tournament held in the Italian capital, the pair made up of Romanian Horia Tecau and Belorussian Max Mirnai qualified for the semifinals, after beating 7-6, 6-4 the pair made up of the Swedish Robert Lindstedt and Canadian Daniel Nestor.
