The Romanian Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean has agreed in Bucharest with his Spanish counterpart Jose Manuel Garcia Margallo upon the conclusion of a strategic partnership between Bucharest and Madrid, which entails, among other things, an action plan for boosting cooperation. Corlatean said that Romania could use the Spanish expertise in using European funds for the development of sectors like infrastructure, energy, environmental protection and regional development. In 2012, bilateral trade exchanges stood at approximately 2.5 billion Euros, 2% more than in 2011. Also, Corlatean stated that the 1 million strong Romanian community in Spain, as well as the Spanish community in Romania help boost the relationships between the two countries.

The Romanian Transport Ministry on Friday resumed the privatization of the freight division of the Romanian Railway Company and eased some of the conditions imposed on bidders. The requested turnover was thus reduced five times, from 100 million Euros to 20 million Euros, but the starting prices of 180 million Euros was maintained. Previously, the privatization commission of the Transport Ministry had announced that none of the three investors that had submitted participation documentation did not manage to qualify for the next stage. The privatization of CFR freight is one of the measures that the Romanian government committed itself to taking in the precautionary agreement concluded with the IMF in 2011.

Romania needs a long term agricultural strategy to include concrete and easy to apply solutions, said in Bucharest on Thursday the European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Dacian Ciolos. Attending the National Farmers’ Association meeting, he also said that Romania may become a major player on the European cereals market. In another move, Ciolos stated that Romania is the only EU member country that does not have national agricultural associations represented in European confederations, and producers should get involved, including financially, to defend their position in the field.

20 feature films based on life stories are running in the 66th Film Festival in Cannes, which is due to end on may 26th. Romanian director Cristian Mungiu, whose film 4 months 3 weeks and 2 days won the Palme dor in 2007, is back in Cannes, but this time as member of the jury chaired by Steven Spielberg. This year, Romania is participating in the competitions only with short reels: In the Fish Tank, by Tudor Cristian Jurgiu will compete in the Cinefondation section, One Year After by Cristian Pascariu will be presented as part of the Short Film Corner, and ‚Shadow of a Cloud by Radu Jude was selected for the Quinzainne de realisateurs section.
