May 10th or Monarchy Day has a threefold significance for Romania. On May 10th 1866 Prince Carol I was proclaimed ruler of Romania, 11 years later Carol signed the act of independence from the Ottoman Empire, while in 1881 also on May 10th, a ceremony took place marking the coronation of Carol I as the first King of Romania. Like every year many events devoted to monarchy have been organized in Romania and the Royal House has offered decorations to several cultural personalities.
The Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation, which this year celebrates 85 years of existence, also received the royal decoration. In the Kings’ Room of the Elisabeta Palace in Bucharest, Crown Princess Margareta of Romania has granted the Romanian public radio the “Nihil Sine Deo” royal decoration for the services provided to Romanians worldwide. Royal advisor, Radu Ghinea, provided the reasons why the Royal House decided to grant this decoration to the public radio:
Radu Ghinea: “His Majesty King Mihai I, through Crown Princess Margareta of Romania, grants the royal decoration “Nihil Sine Deo” to the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation because it is one of the country’s fundamental institutions, which, ever since its existence, has served the country’s superior interests, ensuring communication of the most important moments in Romania’s history of the past 2 centuries to the citizens and the world. The decoration was granted to honor the inestimable value of the recordings made along the years for the historical, national and world heritage, these recordings representing a genuine treasure of truth, culture and information, because the public radio’s current strategy is to impartially present topical issues and to promote the Romanian culture and civilization.”
Radio Romania has been part of Romania’s history in the past 85 years and its birth certificate, dated November 1st 1928, was signed by King Ferdinand, the Chair and CEO of the public radio, Ovidiu Miculescu, has recalled:
Ovidiu Miculescu: “This decoration means, first and foremost, recognition, it means a gesture of honor, of respect, gratitude and appreciation, being at the same time a sign, a message that increases the institution’s responsibility, because Radio Romania has always stood by Romania’s side, by its history, in its good and complicated moments”.
Ovidiu Miculescu also added that the decoration was the first major act of recognition of the Romanian public radio after 85 years.
