On Sunday heiress apparent, Princess Margaret is expected to grant the ‘Nihil Sine Deo’ decoration to the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation for 85 years of activity and for services to the Romanian public the world over. Founded in 2009 the decoration is granted through royal decision for high-level achievements and major contributions in social, scientific, educational, cultural, spiritual, economic, political or military activities. On Saturday the National Radio Orchestra gave a concert in Bucharest dedicated to Monarchy Day, celebrated in Romania on May 10th.
The 17th edition of the European Film Festival continues in Bucharest. The present edition has brought together productions from 11 countries as well as a selection of films made by the students of the National University of Arts. Ukrainian film director Sergei Loznitsa, whose feature film ‘In the fog’ will be screened during the event, is the guest of honour at the festival. ‘In the fog’ reaped numerous international awards, including the FIPRESCI prize last year in Cannes.
Scores of people were killed in several car bomb attacks in southern Turkey, on Saturday, sources with the Turkish Interior Ministry have announced. The blasts took place in the small town of Reyhanli, several kilometers of the Syrian border. Turkey has offered shelter to more than 300 thousand Syrian refugees in camps scattered along the border between the two states. In the past two years Syria has seen a series of revolts, violently repressed by the police force, as well as clashes between troops loyal to Bashar al Assad’s regime and rebel forces. According to UN reports, 70 thousand people have lost their lives in Syria since the beginning of the anti-government protests.
Romanian minister of the economy Varujan Vosganian will be paying a formal visit to Poland between May the 12th and the 14th at the invitation of his Polish counterpart Janusz Piechocinski. Talks will be focusing on new projects as part of the strategic partnership between Romania and Poland and on ways of boosting bilateral trade exchanges and two-way investment. On this occasion, the Romanian minister will be participating in the informal meeting of economy ministers of the Visegrad group, made up of the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary. Besides Romania and Bulgaria this meeting will also bring together ministers from Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Croatia. At the same time minister Vosganian will attend the European Economic Congress in Katowice, where he is due to present Romania’s prospects of economic development, the opportunities it offers for investment and as a trade partner.
