The royal marathon opens the series of events dedicated to Monarchy Day, celebrated on Friday in Romania. On May 10, 1866, Prince Charles I of the House of Hohenzollern Sigmaringen became king of all Romanians, and 11 years later, on the same date, he declared in Parliament Romania’s state independence. Crown Princess Margaret will grant Radio Romania, on behalf of her father, King Michael, the Nihil Sine Deo decoration on the 85th anniversary of the public station for services to all Romanians.
In Romania, the annual rate of inflation is slightly up in April, reaching 5.29% from 5.25% in March, according to national data. In the last 12 months, prices went up mainly in non-food products by 5.8%, while prices for services went up 3.48%, while food prices went up 5.6%. On Wednesday, the Romanian National Bank downgraded its inflation forecast for this year to 3.2%, by 0.3%.
British premier David Cameron is on a visit to Russia to talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin about the situation in Syria. Russia is a key ally of Syrian president Al-Assad, while the UK and the US want him ousted. Last week, Washington and Moscow announced they agreed to encourage the government and rebels in Syria to reach a peaceful agreement, and also agreed to hold an international conference on the issue.
