Romania’s main motivation on its path to EU accession was its awareness of belonging to a community of values it had been separated from for more than half a century, Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean said in a message conveyed today, Europe Day. Many events are organized in Romania to celebrate that day marking the historic statement made by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman in 1950, a statement laying the foundations of the European Coal and Steel Community, the present European Union. May 9th is also State Independence Day. In 1877, the then Foreign Minister Mihail Kogalniceanu proclaimed the independence of the Romanian state from the Ottoman Empire.

In Bucharest, the president of the World Bank, Jim Yong Kim today has meetings with president Traian Basescu and Prime Minister Victor Ponta. The talks will focus on Romania’s opportunities and challenges and on ways whereby the World Bank can support the country’s development. Jim Yong Kim is on a two-day visit to Romania, the first one since he took office as president of the World Bank in July 2012.

Representatives of the Venice Commission and national bodies involved in the Constitution revision process continue debates in Bucharest on the proposals of civil society on amending the Constitution. One of the issues which the power wants to solve is the clarification of the relationship between state institutions, the relationship between the president, the prime minister and Parliament in particular. Secretary of the Venice Commission, Thomas Markert said that the constitutional reform process was a response to last year’s political crisis in Romania, related to the referendum on the impeachment of president Traian Basescu.
