The governing principles set by the Social Liberal Union that has been ruling Romania for almost 1 year now, could ensure economic growth in the coming year, said Tuesday the Social Democrat PM Victor Ponta, co-president of the Social Liberal Union. He believes the Social Liberal Union has brought political stability and a clear-cut government vision, which allowed for an increase in salaries and pensions and for the re-opening of several national projects. He underlined that the government’s main projects focus on the energy sector, on European funds and decentralization. The other Social Liberal Union leader, Liberal Crin Antonescu, who is also speaker of the Senate, said the Union’s legislative priorities were the modification of the Constitution and the country’s regionalization. The Liberal Democratic Party, in opposition, claims the Romanian economy is facing major drawbacks, among which a drop in direct foreign investments and an increase in the public debt.

In Romania the constitutional forum has synthesized the proposals for the modification of the Romanian Constitution and will analyze them, this week, together with the Venice Commission experts and the Parliamentary commission members. So far the constitutional forum has held more than 40 debates in several cities, which were attended by over 1200 people. Hundreds of proposals for the modification of the Constitution have gathered, referring to a wide range of issues among which the citizens’ rights and freedoms, the relationship between state institutions and the definition of sovereignty. The finalized project for the modification of the constitution has to be forwarded to the parliamentary commission on May 21st. An opinion survey made public on Tuesday shows that most Romanians, 63.8% are informed about the revision of the Constitution, 18.4% of them considering that revision is a must.
