The excessive deficit procedure might be stopped for Romania, Latvia and Lithuania, said Friday, in Brussels, the European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Policy, Olli Rehn, upon the presentation of the spring economic forecasts for 2013 and 2014. Latvia and Romania reduced the budget deficit, which dropped under 3% in 2012 and are maintaining the reference value in the forecasts for 2013 and 2014 while Lithuania had a deficit close to the 3% reference value. The excessive deficit procedure might also be stopped for Italy and Hungary on condition they continue fiscal consolidation. On Thursday the president of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, pleaded for the adoption of a plan meant to fight unemployment among young people.
Romania will become independent in terms of energy in the next 5 or 10 years, Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta said on Friday in Constanta. He also stated that the gas and petroleum resources in the Black Sea would fully cover the domestic consumption, turning Romania into an important player on this market. PM Ponta underscored that the gas connection between Romania and the Republic of Moldova should be made this year and that the project regarding the Nabucco gas pipe should also be signed this June.
May 3rd is World Press Freedom Day, which was declared in 1993 by the UN General Assembly. Romania started marking this day in 2000. Last year 88 journalists fell victim to their passion for journalism and as many as 200 were imprisoned due to their professional activities and principles.
