President Traian Basescu said on Friday that Romania is regaining its credibility on the international capital markets, something demonstrated by the latest eurostat figures. He underlined that this is the merit of the Romanian people who during the austerity period made a sacrifice few European nations were willing to make. The president spoke of the crisis of 2010 when Romania was in a very difficult situation and was no longer able to borrow from the international markets to cover state expenses and social obligations such as salaries and pensions. Traian Basescu thanked the governments led by Emil Boc, Mihai Razvan Ungureanu and Victor Ponta for Romania’s economic situation today. According to the latest euro stat figures, Romania’s public debt was 37.6% of the GDP in 2012, while the state budget deficit was at 2.9%.

Romania might switch to the Euro in 2019, because the initially set deadline, 2015, is not realistic. The statement has been made by Prime Minister Victor Ponta, who says Romania should be very well prepared, in order not to fail in its effort to join the Euro zone. President Traian Basescu has said Romania’s switching to the Euro and its Schengen accession are fundamental elements of the country’s complete EU integration. Romania’s joining the free movement area is the focal point on the agenda of talks that the president of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, held in Bucharest on Thursday.

The European Commission on Friday proposed a directive meant to encourage the mobility and free movement of workers within the Union. The proposal also aims at protecting immigrant workers from abusive practices in the countries in which they work. The commissioner for employment and social affairs, Laszlo Andor said he was expecting a slight increase in worker mobility after January 1st 2014, when all EU member states are forced to open their labour markets for Romanian and Bulgarian workers. After the two countries’ entry into the Union in 2007, their workers were temporarily restricted the free access to the labour markers of other member states.
