The European Council president Herman Van Rompuy said in Bucharest on Thursday he would work with the new EU presidency for Romania’s Schengen accession. The European official added that Romania might make significant progress in this respect during the Lithuanian presidency, in the second quarter of the year. The statement was made after the meeting with the president of Romania, Traian Băsescu. In turn, the Romanian official said Romania was successful in restoring the macroeconomic balance, and was one of the first EU member countries to manage to overcome the excessive deficit. The agenda of talks also included the Verification and Cooperation Mechanism through which the European Commission monitors Romania’s judiciary system. The European Council president also met with prime minister Victor Ponta.
Romanian foreign minister Titus Corlăţean was received on Thursday in Baku by president of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev. The main topics of discussion included cooperation in the energy sector and the development of politicial contacts. The two officials mentioned the excellent level of relations between Romania and Azerbaijan, as a result of the strategic bilateral partnership signed in 2009. Corlăţean also invited the president of Azerbaijan to Bucharest. In 2012, Romania and Azerbaijan celebrated 20 years of bilateral diplomatic relations.
The new head of the Romanian Fiscal Administration Agency (ANAF) is Gelu Ştefan Diaconu, appointed to office on Thursday by prime minister Victor Ponta. Diaconu, who stepped down as State Secretary with the Economy Ministry, was nominated for the ANAF post by Finance Minister Daniel Chiţoiu. The main goal for Diaconu is to increase revenues to the state budget, by curbing tax evasion, among others. According to recent estimates by the Fiscal Council, tax evasion amounts to over 20 billion euros a year, which accounts for 15% of the GDP.
Romania has today become the 54th country in the world to have the well-known video platform YouTube in its national language. YouTube Romania will promote local video producers both in this country and around the world. The local advertisement companies and agencies will now be able to target audiences by means of innovative commercial models. At the same time, local producers will have the opportunity of using this portal to reach their audience target.
Romanian tennis player Victor Hănescu Thursaday qualified for the quarter-finals of the BRD Năstase-Ţiriac Trophy, organised in Bucharest, with over 400 thousand euros in prize money. Hanescu, the only Romanian player left in the singles competition, defeated seed no 4 Mihail Iujnîi, from Russia. The Romanian will play against seed no 5 Florian Mayer, from Germany. The tournament in Bucharest, currently in its 18th year, is named after the two most important players in the history of Romanian tennis - Ilie Nastase, former world no 1, and Ion Tiriac.
