During a meeting in Brussels NATO Foreign Ministers on Tuesday condemned North Korea’s nuclear programme and its recent threats, after Pyongyang renewed its demand of being recognized as a nuclear power by the international community on the same day. The 28 NATO Member States have highlighted their support for the resolution of NATO’s Security Council condemning North Korea’s nuclear test of February 12 and imposing new sanctions on Pyongyang. In another development US Secretary of State John Kerry urged NATO to prepare for the possible use of chemical weapons in the Syrian civil war. Romania was represented by Romanian Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean.
Romania’s president Traian Basescu Tuesday promulgated the Law authorising the Emergency Ordinance on the establishment of the Financial Surveillance Authority. Parliament on Wednesday will debate and vote this law. The new institution includes the Committee of Insurance Surveillance, the National Committee of Real Estate Securities and the Surveillance Committee for the Private Pension System.
The European Social Fund may be used to integrate Roma people in countries such as Romania or neighbouring states, EU Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion Laszlo Andor has announced. Commissioner Andor on Monday and Tuesday held meetings with public authorities and representatives of the business communities in Bucharest and Cluj Napoca. The European Social Fund is due to shell out funds from the 2014-2020 EU budget. According to a pilot study conducted by the EU, Europe is currently home to some 12 million people of Roma origin, of which 1 million in Romania.
Moldovan president Nicolae Timofti on Tuesday signed the appointment decree instating Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Iurie Leanca as interim Prime Minister pending the establishment of the new Cabinet. The decree will come into force on Thursday. The Constitutional Court on Monday ruled against the constitutionality of appointing Liberal-Democrat Vlad Filat as Prime Minister as well as the decree by means of which he was appointed interim Prime Minister. The Constitutional Court explained its ruling, saying that the Government fell after it lost Parliament’s vote of confidence over allegations of corruption, thus being unable of exercising its due mandate.
The BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy, one of the most important tennis tournaments in South-eastern Europe, with over 400 thousand euros in prize money, continued in Bucharest on Tuesday. Romanian tennis player Victor Hănescu, currently ranking 55th in world standings, qualified to the second round after brushing aside Matthias Bachinger in two sets, 6-4, 6-3. The most important names playing in Bucharest are world no. 10 Janko Tipsarevic, world no. 13 Gilles Simon and no. 20 Andreas Seppi. The tournament in Bucharest, currently at its 18th edition, bears the name of the best two players in the history of Romanian tennis - Ilie Nastase, former world no.1, and Ion Tiriac.
