The Romanian PM Victor Ponta was re-elected Saturday president of the Social Democratic Party, the main party in the governing alliance in Romania, the Social Liberal Union. Ponta was re-elected president at the extraordinary congress of the Social Democratic Party when the leadership fo the party was also elected with a term in office until 2016. For the first time the Social Democratic Party elected 8 vice-presidents for the future development regions that will be crated with the administrative re-organization of the country. The Social Democratic Party congress also adopted on Saturday the resolution on the merger of the Social Democrats with the National Union for the Progress of Romania.
The ex-Soviet republic of Moldova has to carry on reforms and overcome the current political crisis by forming a pro-European government. This statement was made Saturday, in Chisinau, by the Romanian euro MP Monica Macovei, co-president of the European parliament Delegation for the relation with the Republic of Moldova, and by the vice-president of the European Parliament, Jacek Protasiewicz, in a joint press conference with PM designate Vlad Filat. Monica Macovei underlined that it was important for the Republic of Moldova to manage in 2013 to sign the Association agreement and the one of the visa waiver. The parties from the former Alliance for European Integration are negotiating the formation of a new majority after the fall of the Filat government following a censure motion.
The Romanian woman gymnast Larisa Iordache on Saturday won silver in the vault event at the European Gymnastics Championship hosted by Moscow. Also on Saturday Romanian Flavius Koczi failed to obtain a medal in the floor event, ranking on the 4th position. The Romanian delegation got the first medal on Friday when Larisa Iordache won silver in the all around event. On Sunday, the last day of the European Gymnastics Championship, the following Romanian gymnasts will compete in the finals: Flavius Koczi in the vault event, Andrei Muntean in the parallel bars event, Larisa Iordache and Diana Bulimar in the floor and beam events.
