WASHINGTON – The Romanian Foreign Ministry expressed its regret for the consequences of the explosions which killed and injured people in Boston, declaring its solidarity with the families of the victims and the American people in these tragic moments. The EU, NATO and Russia also condemned explosions, and expressed their support for the American people. Two explosions occurred at the finish line of the Boston marathon, and another one, shortly after, in downtown Boston. According to the most recent toll, three people are dead and 144 have been injured. The US has taken increased security measures, while US President Barack Obama said that those responsible will answer for their deeds.
BUCHAREST – The Romanian government on Tuesday is putting the last touches on the bill on compensation for homes confiscated by the former communist regimes. On Wednesday it will be taking responsibility for it in Parliament. The main provisions of the bill include paying damages in kind to the fullest possible extent, but only to former owners and their heirs, as well as paying out damages in annual installments. The opposition criticized the bill, and announced that they would parry it with a censure motion were it to pass Parliament, and possibly challenge it in Constitutional Court. The changes made to the law were upon the urging of the European Court of Human Rights, which has been stormed by Romanian plaintiffs in cases of this nature.
BUCHAREST – Bucharest on Tuesday hosts a two day meeting on the EU strategy for the Danube region, in collaboration with the European Commission. Romania proposed the project alongside Austria. Participants from the 14 countries on the Danube seek solutions for the proposals of the strategy in terms of national and regional programs utilizing European funds between 2014 and 2020. The strategy is a community cooperation instrument for economic and social development in the Danube macro-region. Of the fourteen countries, eight are EU members, and six are outside the union.
