How Much Will Romanian Doctors Earn? |

More and more Romanian doctors are leaving abroad in search of higher pay. The health minister is considering ways to solve the situation.
“Romanian doctor looking for a new country”, seems to be the motto of more and more doctors who leave abroad in hope of better working conditions and better pay. In 5 years, the education system has produced 7,000 doctors, while 10,000 have left the country during the same period, says Vasile Astarastoae, the president of the College of Physicians in Romania.
The state must show social responsibility and protect the health of its citizens. According to the health minister, Eugen Nicolaescu, a law is being drafted to ensure better pay for doctors, based on achievement and competitiveness, so that they don’t have to look at the West as the “land of promise.” Doctors will also be given the choice of half-time employment, combining the state and private systems, but will not be allowed to convince patients to switch between the two systems.
Minister Nicolaescu explains: "‘We are currently working on a new law that stipulates the following: as a doctor, you are guaranteed a full-time job in a public hospital in which you have to work the 7 hours provided for under the Labour Code; you get a salary, let’s say 3,000 lei, and if you want, you can do extra time by working in the private surgeries created within the public hospital. So this is a way of complementing your income. A second option is to work part-time in a public hospital and part-time in a different job. The state accepts this possibility, as long as you don’t lose your patients. There is also a third option and refers to prestigious surgeons who may want to perform, let’s say, 5 surgeries in Targu Mures and 10 in Bucharest and wish to negotiate their fee. If a given hospital has such cases and is able to support them financially, everything is fine.”
Under the future healthcare law, which may come into force on the 1st of January 2014, the basic salary of a doctor working in the public sector may go up from 400 euros at the moment to 1,000 euros. The low salaries are not, however, the only problem. Doctors are equally concerned about under-financing and under-equipping. To prevent it from going into clinical death, the Romanian healthcare system is in bad need of resuscitation.
