2013 will be a year of major change in the Romanian health system, relevant minister Eugen Nicolaescu has told a private TV station on Sunday. He has pointed out that he plans to thoroughly reform the system, in order to improve the quality of medical services. On Saturday, Minister Nicolaeascu held talks with physicians’ representatives whom he invited to participate, alongside experts, in drawing up a new payment law for medical staff. According to Nicolaescu, under the new law, likely be enforced as of January 1st, 2014, physicians might be paid depending on their performance and salaries might go up from their current level of around 400 euros per month to 1,000 euros.

Croatia, set to become the EU’s 28th member state on July 1st, 2013, is today holding its first elections for the European Parliament. The elections take place against a background of decreasing support for the country’s EU accession because of the economic crisis affecting the former Yugoslav republic. The Croatian officials, aware of the fact that after the accession the country will be one of the poorest in the European Union, with its per capita GDP accounting for 60% of the European average, are hoping that the financial aid granted by the Union, worth over 13-billion euros, will contribute to the country’s economic recovery.

The United States is determined to protect Japan which North Korea threatened with a nuclear attack, US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Sunday at a press conference held together with the Japanese Foreign Minister, Fumio Kshida, after they had talks in Tokyo. North Korea threatened Japan with a nuclear attack on Saturday, after Tokyo had decided to dispatch anti-missile units able to destroy any North-Korean missile targeting the Japanese territory. Experts say a North Korean attack on Japan is rather unlikely.

The Swiss-Portuguese short film ”The Living Also Cry” directed by Basil Da Cunha, won the 7th edition of the NexT International Film Festival held in Romania’s capital city Bucharest. The ’Cristian Nemescu’ Award for Best Direction went to the Spanish film director Chema Garcia Ibarra, for his production ’Mistery’. The Audience Award for Romanian film has been granted to Adrian Silisteanu’s short ’The Ditch’, while the Audience Award for Foreign Film went to the German director Timon Mondersohn’s ”Kaiser&Konig”. The event unfolded under the High Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Margareta of Romania.
