Some one thousand employees of the Oltchim Ramnicu Valcea petrochemical works in southern Romania are today participating in Bucharest in a meeting of protest. They are unhappy with the announced layoffs and the uncertain situation of the company, which is in a state of insolvency because of its huge debts. Protesters are demanding the payment of their much delayed salaries. They are also asking for a meeting with Prime Minister Victor Ponta, attended by all decision makers, to discuss their claims. The meeting in the capital is taking place after three weeks of protests in front of the works in Ramnicu Valcea. Oltchim currently has 3 thousand employees.
On Wednesday, following talks with specialists from the European Human Rights Court, the Romanian Government will decide the start of the procedures under which it will assume responsibility for the draft law regarding the restitution of properties seized by the communist regime. The executive had called for a one month extension of the deadline for the adoption of the new law, for its provisions to be analyzed together with experts. According to the timetable established by the government headed by the Social – Democrat Victor Ponta, the law should be passed by April 12th at the latest. There are thousands of complaints registered from citizens who sued the Romanian State at the European Human Rights Court.
The Speaker of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies, Valeriu Zgonea, is attending in Erevan the ceremony of investiture of the president of Armenia, Serge Sargsian. The agenda of the Romanian official also includes meetings with the President of the National Assembly, Hovik Abrahamyan and the Patriarch of Armenia, Karkin II Nersissian. The visit is taking place against the background of sustained diplomatic dialogue with the countries in the Black Sea Extended Area and confirms Bucharest’s commitment to promoting stability and regional cooperation.
According to the National Employment Agency, the unemployment rate in Romania stood at 5.58% in March this year, accounting for approximately 5 hundred thousand unemployed at national level, most of them in the east and south. The rate registered in March was 0.20% lower than the one in February and 0.43% higher than the rate registered in march 2012.
The British Embassy in Bucharest has announced the opening of a condolence book, in memory of Margaret Thacher, who headed the British Executive between 1979 and 1990. She died on Monday, aged 87. The funerals, accompanied by military honors, will be held at Saint Paul’s Cathedral on April the 17th.. The President of Romania, Traian Basescu, has conveyed a message of condolence to the British Prime Minister David Cameron. The Romanian head of state stressed that Margaret Thatcher was witness to the major changes that occurred after the fall of the communist regimes in Europe and played a major role in defending democracy.
The Romanian athlete Elena Andries has won 3 medals at the European Weightlifting Championship in Tirana, Albania, in the 48 kg category. She got silver in the jerk event and bronze in the throwing event, with a total of 179 kg. The European title went to the Italian Genny Caterina Pagliaro, with a total of 181 kg, and the silver was won by the Azeri Silvia Aneglova, with a total of 179 kg, but weighing less on the scales than Andries. Romania is participating in the championship with 10 athletes. The competition is due to end on Sunday.
