On the International Roma Day celebrated on April 8th, the foreign ministry in Bucharest has given assurances that it will continue to protect the rights and liberties of all Romanian citizens, including Roma. The ministry says Romania has developed, with the help of international organizations, consistent projects aimed at the social inclusion of the Roma population. The International Roma Day has been celebrated in Romania since 1990.

The People’s Movement Foundation, a non-governmental organisation initiated by the Romanian president Traian Basescu has officially been launched in Bucharest. The president of the organsiation, Marian Preda, the dean of the Sociology Faculty of the Bucharest University said the foundation’s goal is to represent the Romanians who refuse to take an active part in political life. About 5,000 people have so far adhered to the foundation.

Bank of Cyprus Romania starts talks with the banks interested in buying it. The bank holds 0.7% of the total assets in the Romanian banking sector, which accounts for about 600 million euros. The banks’ deposits account for approximately 200 million euros.
South Korea has announced that the authorities in Pyongyang are preparing a new ballistic missile test and a fourth nuclear test. Following this announcement, Japan has threatened to shoot down any rocket launched by the regime in North Korea that might infringe on its territory. The situation in the peninsula is analysed in Brussels by the ambassadors of the EU member states. The meeting comes as most of the states with diplomatic missions in Pyongyang implied they have no immediate plans to withdraw their diplomats from North Korea after the latter warned it can no longer guarantee their safety as of April 10th. According to a release from the Romanian Foreign Ministry, the Romanian embassy in North Korea will also continue its activity.
