The right wing Liberal Democratic Party (in opposition) on Saturday elected its new National Standing Bureau. The proceedings were opened by the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, Vasile Blaga, who was re-elected party-president at the Extraordinary National Convention, held on March the 23rd. 120 candidates ran for over 50 central leadership positions.
The “DaKINO” Film Festival, the oldest event of its kind in Romania is underway in Bucharest until Sunday. On Friday, a selection of commercials was screened, as part of the “Night of Advertising Devourers”. Running in the competition are 35 short reels from 15 countries. In the “Brilliant Docs” section, the jury will grant the best documentary prize, based on the public’s vote. The organisers will screen films which have been selected to or have won prizes at such important festivals as those held in Berlin and Cannes, respectively. This year sees a first: “DaKIDS”’, a special section destined for kids, which includes film projections as well as acting and interactive workshops for children.
The 4th International Congress of Romanian Journalists continues in Donji Milanovac, Serbia. The event is unfolding until Sunday, under the motto: “Europe-manipulation-minority”. Identifying a funding solution for the Romanian press abroad is one of the issues that have been debated by the approximately 100 journalists from Serbia, Hungary, the Republic of Moldova, Bulgaria, Greece, Albania, Italy and Romania. Attending the congress, among others, are the president of the Romanian Cultural Institute, Andrei Marga and the Minister for the Romanians from Around the World, Cristian David. The latter met on Friday with some of the leaders of the Romanian ethnic minority in Timoc, north-eastern Serbia.
Romania’s Davis Cup team has lost to the Netherlands, failing to qualify for the World Group stage. On Saturday, the Romanian pair Horia Tecau-Marius Copil was defeated by the Dutch side made up of Thiemo de Bakker and Jean-Julien Rojer. On Friday, in the first single matches, played in the central Romanian city of Brasov, Romanian tennis players Victor Hanescu and Adrian Ungur, lost to Igor Sijsling and Robin Haase, respectively
