The Romanian President Traian Basescu has stated that he will not allow anybody to influence the appointment of chief prosecutors and has contested the political parties’ right to get involved in this procedure. He made the statement after the National Liberal Party, a member of the governing coalition alongside the Social Democratic Party, challenged the nomination of the former General – Prosecutor of Romania, Laura Codruta Kovesi as head of the National Anti-corruption Directorate. The Romanian Government on Friday made public the privatisation of the CFR Freight Company. The tender guarantee stands at 10 million Euros. The starting price of the tender is 800 million lei (180 million Euros). Transport minister, Relu Fenechiu, has announced that the debts of the CFR Freight Company, worth half a billion lei, will be turned into shares until the tender comes to an end.

Serbia is currently hosting the 4th International Congress of Romanian Journalists. The event which lasts until Sunday is held under the logo “Europe-manipulation-minority”. Among the topics debated by the 100 journalists participating in the event are means of finding funding sources for the Romanian press abroad. The organisers say the journalists attending the event have come from Serbia, Hungary, the Republic of Moldova, Bulgaria, Greece, Albania, Italy and Romania. Attending the congress, among others, is the Minister for the Romanians from Around the World, Cristian David. On Friday he met with some of the leaders of the Romanian ethnic minority in Timoc, in northeastern Serbia. Cristian David has reiterated that Romania pays special attention to the Romanians/vlachs in that country, laying special emphasis on their access to tuition and information in Romanian and on their religious rights.

Romania’s Davis Cup team takes on the Netherlands in the second round of the first group of the Euro-African zone. In the first two single matches, played in Brasov, central Romania, on Friday, Romanian Victor Hanescu lost to Igor Sijsling and Adrian Ungur to Robin Haase, respectively. Saturday will see the doubles between Romanian pair Horia Tecau – Marius Copil and the Dutch side made up of Thiemo de Bakker and Jean-Julien Rojer. The last two single games are scheduled on Sunday.
