interventii inundatii The southern half of Romania struggles with serious flooding triggered by the heavy rains over the past few days. Authorities have taken measures to limit the damage.

After a beginning of spring that saw snowfalls and blizzards, Romanians now have to deal with heavy rainfalls and flooding. Yellow, orange and even red alert for flooding is in place in half of the counties in southern, southwestern and central Romania. Deputy Prime Minister Liviu Dragnea, who chaired a meeting of the National Commandment for Emergency Situations on Thursday, said that the counties of Dolj and Gorj, in the southwest, are faced with serious flooding threats, as the level of the Jiu River is very high.

Flooding also threatens several areas neighbouring the Danube, in the south. Dragnea has called on the prefects of counties hit by flooding to take all necessary measures in this respect.
Liviu Dragnea: “I want you to make sure rescue teams are on stand-by and that they are equipped with everything they need. If there are any isolated families or households in your area, the first thing you should do is estimate how much food, medicines and other materials they might need. “

According to a report by the Interior Ministry, flooding has already affected over 140 localities, damaging 100 bridges and footbridges and tens of roads. Numerous houses and households and thousands of hectares of farm and pasture land have been flooded. More than 1,000 policemen, firemen and gendarmes, as well as 400 pieces of water removal equipment have been mobilised to pump the water away and limit the damage.
On the other hand, Minister Delegate for Waters, Forestry and Fisheries, Lucia Varga explained why rivers burst their banks almost every year in certain areas.
Lucia Varga: “Many of the natural disasters affecting the country have been trigged by uncontrolled deforestation. Watercourses are clogged by the alluvia coming down the deforested hills so we have to take tough measures against those who cut down forests and thus generate such phenomena.”

Weather forecasts say it will continue to rain and the threat of flooding is still high. Localities along the Danube are the most exposed. Hydrologists say the Danube has already exceeded its normal levels and an increase in the river’s flow to 12,000 cubic meters per second between Calafat and Zimnicea localities is also expected.
