The Romanian PM, Victor Ponta, who is also interim minister of justice, on Wednesday forwarded to the Supreme Council of Magistracy the nominations of Laura Codruta Kovesi and Tiberiu Nitu at the head of the National Anti-corruption Directorate and of the Prosecutor’s Office respectively. The hearing of candidates will take place at the end of May. The nominations risk causing heated debates within the Social Liberal Union, in power, given that the Liberals have already shown opposition to appointing Laura Kovesi, a former general prosecutor of Romania, as head of the National Anticorruption Directorate. The Liberals accused her of defending the interests of President Traian Basescu. On the other hand, the European Commission reiterated the need to set up a selection procedure for the candidates running for leading positions in the Prosecutor’s Office.

The increase in economic competitiveness is a priority of Romania if it wants to join the euro zone. The statement has been made by president Traian Basescu at the ceremony marking the centennial of the Academy of Economics in Bucharest. The Romanian president went on to say that as compared with the competitive private sector, the state sector was loss-making.

The Romanian Foreign Ministry warns the Romanians citizens who travel to Greece that air traffic will be disturbed because of a 24-hour strike to take place on April 4th. Those who go on strike are regional civil aviation authorities. On the other hand ferryboats providing transportation between the Greek Islands remained in ports on Wednesday, blocked by a warning strike of sailors who protest against a draft law stipulating the reduction of the crewmembers on board. Greece has been obliged to pass austerity measures over the past years imposed by international lenders in exchange for two loans worth 240 billion euros.

The Romanian Higher Defence Council on Wednesday met in Bucharest under the chairmanship of President, Traian Basescu. The main topics of discussion were the stage of Romania’s accession to the Schengen Space and the way responsible institutions act in the case of terrorist attacks involving Romanian citizens from abroad.
