Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta, who is also interim Justice Minister, has today submitted to the Superior Council of Magistracy the nomination of Laura Codruta Kovesi as head of the National Anticorruption Directorate and of Tiberiu Nitu as prosecutor general. The nominations risk stirring heated debates within the ruling Social Liberal Union with the Liberals firmly standing against the nomination of Laura Codruta Kovesi, former prosecutor general of Romania. The Liberals have accused her of defending the interests of president Traian Basescu.

Romania’s Supreme Defense Council is today meeting under the chairmanship of president Traian Basescu. The meeting focuses on Romania’s Schengen accession and the cyber threats against this country. The report on the Supreme Defense Council’s activity in 2012 will also be discussed.

The increase of economic competitiveness is a priority of Romania if it wants to join the euro zone. The statement has been made by president Traian Basescu at the ceremony marking the centennial of the Academy of Economics in Bucharest. The Romanian president went on to say that as compared with the competitive private sector, the state sector was loss-making, including the autonomous operators.

The Chamber of Deputies of Romania’s Parliament is today debating a motion on the Bucharest metro introduced by the Liberal-Democratic Party in opposition. The liberal-democrats demand the safe funding of continuing metro investments and recommend a financial transfer from the Environment Ministry to the Transport Ministry.
