More than one thousand employees of the Olthcim petrochemical plant in Ramnicu Valcea, in the south, are to be laid off due to the plant’s insolvency and 300 are to face technological unemployment. The judicial manager of Oltchim explained that the layoffs decision is a consequence of the conditions imposed by the plant’s financiers and business partners. Trade unions protested this past week, considering the decisions illegal. On the other hand PM Victor Ponta said Olthcim could not count on state aid since it is not accepted by the European Commission. The Oltchim petrochemical plant is on the list of big state-owned companies that need to be privatized.

It’s unacceptable for the British government to put a stigma on the Romanian and Bulgarian citizens, said the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Nils Muiznieks. In an interview to the British paper The Guardian he warned that, through their attitude, the British authorities fuel stereotypes and hostility towards foreigners. The debate on immigration in Britain has taken a worrying turn, believes the human rights commissioner, who also reminds of London’s intention to limit the access of Romanians and Bulgarians to health and housing benefits. The statements were made in the context in which several British politicians talked about a so-called invasion of Romanian and Bulgarian citizens after restrictions on the British labor market will be lifted as of January 1st 2014.

Catholic believers from all over the world, Romania included, are celebrating Easter on Sunday, 5 weeks ahead of the Orthodox believers. This is the longest period of time separating the Easter celebration of the two churches. In 2010 and 2011 Easter was celebrated on the same day by all Christians – Orthodox, Catholic, Greek Catholic, Evangelists and reformed and also by Neo-protestant denominations. On Easter Sunday the new sovereign pontiff, Pope Francis, will hold the Resurrection mass in the Saint Peter Square at the Vatican before tens of thousands of believers. From the basilica balcony the Pope will address, in tens of languages, the traditional Easter message and blessing “Urbi et orbi”.
