In expozitie “I won’t leave behind a marble sculpture, a bronze sculpture or a drawing but my very soul transposed in these moving shapes“ Romanian sculptor Marcel Guguianu says. At 85, the artist is a master of the marble and bronze secrets and has become a classic along with other Romanian sculptors of genius like Constantin Brancusi or Ion Irimescu. His works shown in the big capital cities of the world recommend him as a genuine ambassador of Romanian culture. On show in the solo exhibition opened in Bucharest on Monday is his famous bronze sculpture ‘The Lark ' that has become the World Bank ‘s emblem. Visitors can also admire a copy after Guguianu‘s famous “ Pieta “ that is displayed in the UN Palace in Geneva. “The Lark” has often been compared to Brancusi‘s “Maiastra”. “ Brancusi ‘s genius has touched me to a certain extent “ Guguianu said.

Guguianu met Brancusi when he was a boy but his great artistic frienships came when he reached maturity; he made friends with poet Nichita Stanescu who exclaimed coming to his studio in Bucharest, quote “ I’m jealous of this poetry “ unquote or with painter Corneliu Baba, sculptor George Apostu, prose writer Marin Preda, poet Marin Sorescu. The artist himself was described as a poet sculptor because his creation means, as he himself admitted in an interview, quote “ something flowing starting from good music, a nice word or a hug “unquote. As professor Razvan Theodorescu remarked at the official opening of the retrospective exhibition, one of Guguianu‘s favourite themes is woman:

“This carver in noble rock and metal is first and foremost a lover of curved shapes capturing the light and of transparent bronze and marble. He is a solar spirit who loves man and above all, woman.“ In expozitie

The woman who is actually a partner in the immaterial and eternal dialogue with man and the artist himself makes Marcel Guguianu wonder:

“What is the artist’s gesture for a woman? It is like what women do for us, particularly those who let themselves be caressed, drawn or sculpted“.

Endowed with a great generosity, in 1997, Marcel Guguianu donated his whole creation to the Museum in Birlad, North-Eastern Romania, a town where he was born and where the school of arts and trades bears his name. Guguianu was one of the partners in RRI’s contest “From Brancusi to Guguianu“ offering a copy of his bronze work “Aurora “ won by RRI’s Italian-Brazilian listener Leonardo Caringi.

“Today, I’m closer to the end than to the beginning”, the indefatigable artist confesses. He is closer to the end of his life and not of his work “because-the artist makes it clear-I can still talk with the shapes”.Maestrul vorbind la vernisaj
