The Romanian head of state, Traian Basescu, on Wednesday awarded the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjorn Jagland, who is on a formal visit to Bucharest. the Star of Romania National Order, in rank of Grand Officer. The President said he awarded the order in token of appreciation for the competence and professionalism proven by the European official in the relation with Romania. Also on Wednesday, Thorbjorn Jagland held talks with the Romanian PM Victor Ponta, who announced that the Romanian Government and Parliament will ask for legal assistance from the Venice Commission, the Council of Europe’s advisory body, for the revision of the Romanian Constitution. The agenda of Jagland’s visit, which ends on Thursday, also includes a meeting with the Senate Speaker. Crin Antonescu.

Romania fully supports the start of negotiations for Bosnia-Herzegovina’s EU accession, said in Bucharest on Wednesday the Romanian President Traian Basescu. He held talks with the president of Bosnia - Herzegovina, Nebojsa Radmanovici, who is on a state visit to Romania. The Romanian head of state also said that Bucharest supported the open doors policy, both for NATO and for the EU, and Balkan security was an element of national security to Romania. Diplomatic ties were set between Romania and Bosnia – Herzegovina in 1996. In 2012, the total volume of bilateral trade exchanges was worth some 174 million dollars.

The MP statute was voted with a large majority by Romania’s Parliament in plenary session on Wednesday. The law was reexamined after the Constitutional Court had ruled that certain articles were unconstitutional. The period of time during which an MP found incompatible by the National Integrity Agency can challenge the agency report was changed from 45 to 15 days. Also, the period of 6 months during which an MP who is in a conflict-of-interest situation is not allowed to attend parliament’s sessions was reduced to 30 days.

US federal officials are investigating the famous company Microsoft and its business partners that are said to have given bribe to government officials in Romania, Italy and China in order to win certain contracts. US investigators are checking whether Microsoft played any role in the case in which intermediary partner companies allegedly gave bribes in Romania to get software contracts with the Ministry of Communications. The authorities in Bucharest have stated that such accusations are incompatible with the Ministry’s activities and made it clear that the Ministry’s staff do not know anything about any business arrangement that Microsoft has or may have with its intermediaries.

The political dialogue between the EU and the Republic of Moldova, the former Soviet Republic with a predominantly Romanian speaking population, has made significant progress in the past year, reads a report issued by the European Commission on Wednesday. The document, drawn up under the European neighborhood policy says that in 2012 the authorities in Chisinau took major steps in key fields such as health-care, education and the energy sector. Also, the Republic of Moldova started implementing ambitious reforms in justice and in the fight against corruption. The recommendations included in the report regard the revision of the Constitution, administrative decentralization and a full observance of the human rights. We recall that the relation between the EU and the Republic of Moldova, whose European aspirations are unconditionally supported by Romania, started to get stronger in 2009, when a pro-European alliance came to power.
