World leaders hail the election of Argentine cardinal Jorje Mario Bergoglio as new pope Francis. The UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon hopes the new head of the Catholic Church will continue to promote inter-faith dialogue. European Union leaders wished the pontiff a long pontificate, which will allow him to promote peace, solidarity and human dignity. US president Barack Obama said the choice of a pope from the American continent speaks to the strength and vitality of a region that is becoming increasingly important. Romanian president Traian Basescu also congratulated the new pope and expressed confidence in the consolidation of existing ties between Romania and the Holy See based on common values and in the spirit of dialogue between Catholic and Orthodox Christians. On Wednesday, the 266th head of the Catholic Church addressed the crowds in St. Peter’s Square in Rome and the gave them his first blessing.

Romania’s president Traian Basescu is attending a 2-day spring meeting of the European Council in Brussels. Talks focus on the economic situation in the European Union and the bloc’s strategic relationship with Russia. President Basescu is also due to attend a meeting of the European People’s Party in Brussels. Romania’s prime minister and leader of the Social Democratic Party Victor Ponta, is in Brussels to attend the European Council preparatory meeting of Party of European Socialists.

Romania’s foreign minister Titus Corlatean is travelling to Turkey following an invitation from his counterpart in Ankara, Ahmet Davutoğlu. The two officials will sign the Strategic Partnership Action Plan and discuss political and sectoral cooperation, as well as topical regional and international issues. The Romanian foreign minister will also be received by Turkey’s president Abdullah Gül.

Romania’s Steaua Bucharest will tonight meet the English side Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in London, in a return game as part of Europa League’s round of 16. Steaua defeated Chelsea in the first leg 1-nil. Chelsea, the favourites for tonight’s game, are the current holders of the Champions League title and occupy the first position in the World Club Ranking.
