Prime minister Victor Ponta will have a meeting in Bucharest on Monday with the president of the European Investment Bank, Werner Hoyer and the vice-president of that institution, the Romanian Mihai Tănăsescu. Also attending the meeting will be the deputy prime minister and minister for finances, Daniel Chiţoiu, as well as the delegate minister for the budget, Liviu Voinea. The European Investment Bank is the long-term loan provider of the EU, and its role is to contribute to the integration, balanced development and the social and economic cohesion of member states. Between 2007 and 2011, the EIB gave Romania loans totalling over 4 billion euros.
The delegate minister for the budget, Liviu Voinea, has announced in Bucharest that a positive budget revision will be operated this July. According to current data, fiscal revenues for this year are estimated to be close to 9% higher than in 2012, while revenues from the income and profit taxes will be over 11% higher. Meanwhile, next week the government will make a first estimate on a planned 15% reduction in its personnel, procurement and service expenditure.
Simplifying consular procedures and reducing service fees for the Romanians abroad, improving the image of Romania and reorganising the Romanian language, civilisation and culture programmes are the immediate priorities of the minister delegate for Romanians abroad, Cristian David. He also mentioned that Romanians abroad are often the victims of various slandering campaigns and announced that by early April he would present a strategy for the Romanians in the Diaspora.
Cezar will represent Romania in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest, after he won the national selection stage of the competition with a song called 'It's my life'. He will compete in the second semi-final in Malmo, scheduled for May 16th, and the Eurovision final will be held on May the 18th. Romania’s best performances in the Eurovision competition were two third places, won in 2010 by Paula Seling and Ovi with the song 'Playing with fire' and in 2005 by Luminiţa Anghel and Sistem with 'Let My Try', and a fourth place in 2006, by Mihai Trăistariu with 'Tornero'.
The city of Timişoara (in the west) has won the 2013 Earth Hour Romania title, and on March 23rd, when Earth Hour will be celebrated, it will join the events organised around the world with a special programme that includes turning off the lights in the centre of the city, bike rides and walks with candles and flashlights as well as astronomical observations. Timisoara qualified in the final after it got the highest score for energy efficiency and relevant plans for the future, and won the 2013 Earth Hour Romania title because its locals collected the largest amount of plastic packaging in one day, namely 3.58 tonnes. Taking part in the collecting campaign were several schools, NGOs and public institutions.
