The Romanian PM Victor Ponta said Saturday that he agreed with the action of Germany, Finland, Denmark and the Netherlands that sent a joint letter to the president of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, in which they ask for the introduction of a mechanism for the protection and observance of the EU fundamental values in case a country violates the rule of law principles. But, the Romanian PM underscored, these standards should be clear and fairly applied to both Romania and the states that invented democracy in Europe. The Romanian foreign minister, Titus Corlatean, says the mechanism should also include principles such as solidarity among older and newer EU members and the rejection of populism.

The international ratings agency Fitch downgraded Italy’s sovereign debt rating by one notch from A- to BBB+ - and added that the outlook was negative, due to the country’s political and economic instability. The decision was made following the uncertain result of the Italian parliamentary elections held in February, which makes unlikely the formation of a new stable government in the coming weeks. Also the agency expects Italy to report a more serious recession than what the EC had previously estimated and a public debt of almost 130% in 2013. Fitch is the first rating agency that sanctions Italy after the elections, and similar actions might be taken by Moody’s and Standard and Poor’s that maintain the negative prospects for this country.

The Romanian rugby team will take on the Georgian side, holder of the trophy, on March 16th in Bucharest in the last game of the competition.
