The Romanian President, Traian Basescu, on Thursday told the Academic world in Bucharest that the process of amending the Constitution must start from the 2009 referendum, in which citizens opted for a single-chamber Parliament with 300 MPs. Parliament in Bucharest presently consists of two chambers and roughly 600 MPs. Crin Antonescu, the Senate speaker has underlined that the process of amending the Constitution must serve the Romanian citizen. The new amendments are aimed at clarifying the president’s prerogatives and his relation with the government and Parliament, the structure of the legislature and the MP statute. Debates over amendment proposals are to be held inside a constitutional forum and last for several months.

In Brussels, the EU interior ministers have agreed that the issue of Romania’s and Bulgaria’s Schengen accession should be resumed by the end of the year, with a view to finding a solution for the two countries’ accession in two stages. According to the Romania interior minister, Radu Stroe, the Netherlands and Finland, although they agreed with the two countries’ accession to the Schegen space, referred to the Mechanism for Cooperation and Verification in the filed of the judiciary, which is being managed by the European Commission. We recall that on Tuesday 54 Moldovan Mps backed the no-confidence vote filed by the communists against the government led by Vlad Filat. The vote came amid a crisis currently affecting the pro-Western Alliance presently ruling the country.

Romania participates, from Thursday to Sunday, in the International Tourism Fair hosted by Berlin, the largest event of the kind in Europe. 50 Romanian tour operators will promote biodiversity, wines, folk traditions, tourist circuits and the monasteries in northern Moldavia. More than 11 thousand exhibitors from 188 countries participated in last year’s edition of the fair.
