Mr Mark Gittenstein, whose great-grandfather was born in Romania, was appointed ambassador to Bucharest less than a year ago. Upon celebrating 130 years of US-Romanian diplomatic relations, he gave an interview to the daily Romania Libera, in which he mentions the surprise he had when arriving in Romania and finding ‘’an incredible diversity, a varied geography’’ and a capital city where ‘’many things happen – a city with a tremendous energy’’.

But Mr Gittenstein does not only run through the list of local tourist attractions. He calls Romania ‘’America’s best friend I the region’’, and evokes the solidity of ties between the two states. However, he does point out there are still ‘’corruption problems, a damaged legal system and an insufficiently developed economy’’ in the country. Washington has demonstrated its attachment to the Romanian people, as a supporter of democratic changes and reforms, which drove the country’s NATO and EU accession, and which also helped it return to the family of Euro-Atlantic democracies.

As partners and allies when it comes to new international challenges, Bucharest and Washington are actively engaged in efforts to promote democracy, security and stability in various regions of the world, and stand shoulder to shoulder in global anti-terrorist activities. ‘’We are getting increasingly close. I am very happy that Romania has increased its activity within NATO and that it plays an important role in Afghanistan and I am convinced that it will continue to play this role.

The strategic relation is gaining strength by the day’’, Mr Gittenstein says. A recent reconfirmation of this special relationship is Bucharest’s decision to take part in the development of the American anti-missile defense system, a project that will increase the security of Romania, the US and the whole of Europe.

His Excellency also gave some advice in his interview with the daily Romania Libera, pointing out that ‘’investors will choose the country where they find the greatest transparency and where they can see predictability as regards the rule of law, and where the most competent bureaucrats exist. Corruption hampers all these things. So it runs against Romania’s interests not to solve the corruption problem.”
