THE CASE OF JOURNALIST DAN DIACONESCU 23/06/2010 |
(2010-06-23) |

“Diaconescu, the Con Artist, and Medicine Man”, headlines the daily paper Adevarul. The paper writes that Diaconescu and the clairvoyant who joined him in police custody took advantage of the naivety of a village mayor and threatened him with apocalyptic prophesies about his son and “revelations” about his wealth. Dan Diaconescu is the pioneer of tabloid television in Romania. His studio has supplied the scene for many dubious characters, including extremist politicians, false healers and failed artists.
Dan Diaconescu has been repeatedly accused of lacking all sense of decency and professional ethics, but even the most radical of media institutions in Romania have objected to the closing down of his station, invoking the freedom of expression. The OTV television is all about the grotesque and the sensational, something encouraged by the owner himself, the host of a programme that lasts until late at night. Diaconescu’s smartest move so far, according to some people, was to turn his station into an election platform for president Traian Basescu last autumn, when he was running for a second term.
After the election, ministers and politicians from the president’s camp were frequent guests of OTV’s programmes. The daily paper Romania Libera has been speculating that the frequent presence of the government’s representatives on OTV was allegedly used by the people accused of blackmail as a perfect instrument of intimidation.
The newspaper Gandul believes the biggest problem is not so much the blackmail as the way in which the state, through its institutions supervising the professional integrity of the media has allowed what the paper calls “the monstrosities shown on OTV”, which increased ratings and Dan Diaconescu’s already considerable bank accounts. “Being paraded in hand-cuffs in front of television cameras is not a punishment for Dan Diaconescu, but just another episode in his show. His station’s ratings will increase significantly as a result of all this. It’s almost as if Dan Diaconescu himself choreographed that string of events.”
