THE BUCHAREST-CHISINAU DIPLOMATIC TIES 22/06/2010 |

The International Monetary Fund experts have said that Chisinau has overcome the economic recession. The economy of the republic, which, under the communists had become the poorest state in Europe, rose in the first three months of the year by 4.7% compared to the same period last year, while a World Bank report forecasts an overall growth of 2.5% in 2010 and 3.6% in 2011.
As far Moldova’s foreign policy is concerned, interim president Mihai Ghimpu and prime minister Vlad Filat have managed to convince their international partners that they are committed and able to lead Chisinau on the path to westernisation. In Washington, Moldovan envoys obtained funding from the International Monetary Fund and the American administration.
In Brussels, they are negotiating both a new association agreement between the European Union and the Republic of Moldova and the visa-free access of Moldovan citizens to the community area. In Bucharest, where the visceral anti-Romanian sentiment of the communists had offended the political class and the public alike, Moldova has again become a privileged partner based on a common language, culture and history.
On Monday, president Ghimpu signed the decree to appoint the new Moldovan ambassador to Romania. The diplomat Iurie Renita is 52 years old, a graduate of the National School of Political and Administrative Studies in Bucharest and a former chairman of the OSCE mission in Croatia. Iurie Renita:
“The special and privileged relations with Romania are the number one priority. The opening we have seen lately will be put to good use. Bucharest is a key player in Moldova’s European future.”
Despite being itself hit very hard by the crisis, Romania has granted Moldova a non-reimbursable loan of 100 million euros. Moreover, Bucharest has proposed the inter-connection of the two states’ energy and railroad infrastructure. Moreover, it has again started to grant scholarships to thousands of Moldovan pupils and students, and, thanks to a small-scale border trade agreement, has facilitated access to Romania to almost 1 million Moldovan citizens living in the areas close to the border.
