The south of Romania is ready to face another wave of heat, when temperatures will rise to 35 up to 37 degrees C, warns the National Meteorological Administration. Also the temperature- humidity index will go past the critical threshold of 80 units these days.
Weather forecasts show unstable weather especially in the hilly and mountainous regions. Meteorologists warn that the UV radiation levels will rise in the absence of a cloud cushion.
Doctors say that the people who stay in the sun too much in this period could develop serious health problems in time. Over the past days the rate of emergency calls across the country was very high due to the scorching weather. The ambulance service of Bucharest and Ilfov county (in southern Romania) had to attend to over 1,000 calls at the weekend. Several people fainted in the street because of the heat, the most affected being the people with a heart condition, the elderly and the children. The high temperatures also affect the people with psychological disorders. Doctors recommended the population to avoid staying in the sun during the hot days, to dress properly, drink a lot of water and eat fruit and vegetables.
The hot weather also affects railway traffic. The Romanian Railway Authority decided to lower the speed limit of trains. Many train delays have also been reported.
The heat at the weekend sent people to the Black Sea coast. More than 30 thousand Romanians fled the scorcher to take refuge in the seaside resorts where the water temperature rose to 20 degrees C.
But there was another place where Romanians could cool down a bit in the remaining snow: Balea Lake in the Fagaras mountains. Hundreds of tourists climbed at an altitude of 2,000 meters to participate in the Summer Snow Celebrations. Temperatures did not exceed 21 degrees C.
The wave of heat also affected countries in Central Europe where torrential rains were reported besides very high temperatures.
