The Transylvania International Film Festival (TIFF), which started late last week in Cluj Napoca, central Romania, has reached its ninth edition. All along these years, TIFF has become a brand recognised both at home and abroad, not only for the top quality of the programmes presented but also for its excellent organisation. The 2010 edition includes 240 films from 47 countries. 12 feature films are competing for the TIFF trophy including “Soul Kitchen” directed by Turkish born German film director Fatih Akin, which won the best film award and the jury special prize at the Venice Festival in 2009.
The American film “ Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire “ directed by Lee Daniels which in 2009 won the Oscar award for the best adapted screenplay. In the short film section, the Israeli productions are expected with great interest, among which we can mention “Lebanon”, the 2009 Gold Lion winner at the Venice Film Festival. Some 400 professional film makers are taking part in various sections of the festival, in workshops or contests. The special guest in this year’s TIFF is German film director and producer Wim Wenders, the president of the European Film Academy.
The Romanian theatre is also celebrating. This week, Sibiu, the former European cultural capital in 2007, is the venue for the 17th International Theatre Festival - the most outstanding event of its kind in Romania and the third largest and most important in the world. Participants from 70 countries present 350 events in 66 locations. Opening of the festival, the troupe of the Odin Theatre from Denmark performed the play “ Ode to Progress” staged by Italian director and dramatist Eugenio Barba. The cultural offer of this edition is quite rich and diverse ranging from the most outstanding productions of big Romanian and foreign theatres to light, music and pantomime shows, flamenco, ballet, contemporary dance shows or puppet theatre pieces. The Sibiu International Theatre Festival also includes conferences, photo and painting exhibitions and book launches.
