At the 2010 Eurovision contest, held in Norway’s capital, Romania’s representatives Paula Seling and Ovi Cernauteanu managed to walk home with third place. They shared the podium with Germany, which came in first, and Turkey, which ranked second. Paula and Ovi put on top performances at both the second semifinals on May 27, and at the finals, on May 29. Ovi’s song ‘Playing with Fire’ won the Romanians 162 points in total, four more than Luminita Anghel and the band Sistem, who, five years ago, also managed to come in third.

During the process of awarding points, Paula and Ovi were constantly in the first five places, finally finding themselves placed decisively in third position after the Republic of Moldova granted them 12 points. Here is the breakdown of the points granted to Romania, country by country: Armenia, Slovakia and Belarus – one point, Turkey, Bosnia Herzegovina, Lithuania, Ukraine – two points, Russia and Latvia – 3 points, Switzerland and Greece – four points, Albania, Malta, Holland and Iceland – five points, Serbia and Poland – six points, Ireland, Slovenia and Azerbaijan – 7 points, Denmark, Cyprus, the UK and Israel – 8 points, Portugal, Spain, Norway and Sweden – ten points, and Moldova – 12 points.

The two singers met in 2009 at the Golden Stag festival in Brasov, where Ovi got the Bronze Stag Award and the Popularity Award, which were presented to him by Paula Seling, who was sitting on the jury. When they met, they discovered a few things in common: both are talented young artists, both play the piano, and both take their musical careers very seriously. The two artists said that they will continue to collaborate together, and are planning a tour to promote the song ‘Playing with Fire’. What’s more, recording an album together is in the pipeline. On the Telenor Arena stage, the duo performed on a transparent double grand piano decorated with white lights, a bespoke designer instrument made by Paula Seling’s husband. Four female singers also supported the duo, helping out on backing vocals.
