“A heated week” writes the daily newspaper EVENIMENTUL ZILEI saying that quote “in the coming days, the Executive has to decide on the cut in salaries and pensions so that the measures should take effect as soon as possible.”

The pro-governmental and pro-presidential newspaper insists that the extreme austerity measures announced by President Traian Basescu and PM Emil Boc – namely the cut in salaries by 25% and of pensions by 15% as of June 1st, are a sine qua non condition for Romania to receive the next payment of the stand by loan agreed upon with the IMF.

The same paper warns however that, even if the government coalition made up of the Liberal Democratic Party, the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania and National Union for the Progress of Romania, “decides to ask the Parliament for a vote of confidence, the austerity measures proposed cannot be applied as of June 1st.”

The Parliament will extend the suspense because the Social Democrat and Liberal opposition announced that they would bring many amendments to the government’s project and eventually they would ‘demolish’ it by a censure motion. Another daily newspaper ADEVARUL writes that the leaders of the National Liberal Party quote “have brought up again the issue of Parliament’s impeaching the president” unquote, as they are convinced that this time, unlike in 2007, in the likelihood of a referendum, Romanians will vote massively for ousting President Basescu.

Meanwhile in a country dubbed by the daily JURNALUL NATIONAL “the country of draconic measures” strikes will go on. Infuriated by the sacrifice that the government forces them to make, the main trade union confederations have decided to go on an all out strike at the end of this month. So, next week ground and underground transportation will be paralysed, teachers will freeze the school year and the Baccalaureate exam, civil servants will shut down their offices and doctors will only deal with emergencies.

Romania is on the verge of collapse and the daily paper GANDUL ironically gives President Basescu mitigating circumstances of the fair-play: “the social disaster triggered by the so-called anti-crisis measures had to be assumed by the one who appointed and maintained in power the weakest government ever” of post-Communist Romania, unquote.. A recent opinion poll carried by the media shows that it is Basescu and not PM Boc’s team who is to blame for the disaster in Romania. The same poll shows that 80% of respondents believe that Romania is going in the wrong direction.
