This year the Romanian films that were screened at the Cannes International Film Festival have also enjoyed favourable critical reviews particularly on the part of American critics. Wide coverage has been given to the two films screened in the "Un Certain Regard" category. Film director Cristi Puiu, who won an award in that category in 2005 with the film “The Death of Mr. Lazarescu“ has come back in 2010 with the film “Aurora“.
It is his third feature film, which speaks about the dramas generated by extra-marital relationships. The film “Tuesday after Christmas “ by Radu Muntean presents the story of a man forced to choose between his wife and his lover shortly before Christmas. The Hollywood Reporter writes that the Cannes Film Festival which has the merit to have discovered “ the new Romanian wave “ keeps the tradition in 2010 as well introducing the best Romanian film productions in its selection. “ Romanians can’t make a bad film. It‘s like, illegal in their country. Or at least not in their DNA “, the Los Angeles Time “wrote.
Over the last four years, film makers from the small East European nations have swept into the south of France every May and put bigger, more storied film cultures to shame, the US and the fiercely proud host country among them. Then, the Los Angeles Time critics surveyed the Romanian epoch making films in Cannes starting with “ The Death of Mr Lazarescu“ by Cristi Puiu (2005), 2007 Palme d’Or award winning film “4 Months, 3 weeks and 2 Days“ by Cristian Mungiu, “Police, Adjective by Corneliu Porumboiu in 2009. The “Variety” critics appreciate“ the dialogues which are of exceptional naturalism, the top quality image of the film “Tuesday after Christmas “.
In exchange, The New York magazine considers “Aurora“ a disappointment. Coming back to this year’s festival, we recall that the documentary “The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu“ by Andrei Ujica was presented in the Hors Competition section and “Hi, how are you doing ?” by Alexandru Maftei was screened as part of the Marche du Film section. Another Romanian film maker, Ionut Piturescu is present in the Semaine de la critique category with the documentary “ Quest “ and another 13 new short films will be screened in the Romanian Short Waves programme, as part of the Short Film Corner section.
