The governing Social Liberal Union won quite comfortably Sunday’s parliamentary election. According to partial results, the Union got 59% of the votes, the largest score ever obtained by a political force in Romania after the one secured by the National Salvation Front, right after the 1989 anti-communist revolution. Second in Sunday’s election came the Right Romania Alliance, dominated by the pro-presidential Liberal Democratic Party, with only 17%, not enough to give them membership in the new government.
Ranking third, with 14%, is the Party of the People, established by the controversial businessman and populist politician Dan Diaconescu. Also represented in the new Parliament will be the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania, which has been part of most governments since 1990. This time the party got a little over 5%, which is the election threshold. Right after the end of the voting, the liberal leader Crin Antonescu, co-president of the Social Liberal Union, stated that their victory is actually an irrevocable sentence against the regime headed by president Traian Basescu.
Crin Antonescu: “This is not just the victory of one party. It is the highest political score ever obtained by an alliance since 1990. This vote prevents Traian Basescu from ever playing with people’s destinies.”
In turn, the social-democrat leader and Prime Minister Victor Ponta, has stated that the will of those who cast their vote is quite clear, and Romania needs national reconstruction.
Victor Ponta: “We can talk about projects, but one spanning not just one or seven months. When there is peace, stability, predictability and clear majority, you can think ahead, and plan for four years or longer."
The Prime Minister has stated that discussions with the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians will start soon, to reach a constitutional majority in Parliament. Discussions will mainly focus on the constitutional reform, which is a priority for the ruling alliance. On the other hand, the head of the Liberal Democratic Party, Vasile Blaga, has accused the manipulation campaign carried by the opponents, and has assured that the MPs representing the Right Romania Alliance will defend the Euro-Atlantic Romania.
Vasile Blaga: “I want to assure Romanians that the senators and deputies who are members of the Right Romania Alliance will do all that we promised in our election campaign: they will defend the rule of law, will fight for a European Romania, a Romania that will stand by its Euro-Atlantic friends.”
Sunday’s turnout was over 41%. The main stake of the election remains though the seat of Prime Minister. The Social Liberal Union’s proposal remains Victor Ponta, though the head of state, Traian Basescu, is not happy with it.
