The Romanian foreign minister, Teodor Baconschi, had an appreciative comment regarding the performance of the new government of the neighbouring Republic of Moldova, that took office last autumn. ''Europe has been positively surprised by what this reform-driven and pro-European coalition has managed to achieve in 7 months.''

After 8 years, between 2001 and 2009, during which anti-Romanian feelings were used in the stead of a governing program by the former Communist regime in Kishinev, the return to normality seems spectacular. Always sensitive to the situation in the neighbouring state, to which it is bound by common history, language and culture, Romania has shown a prompt reaction to radical reforms promoted by the new administration and conducted by interim president Mihai Ghimpu and prime minister Vlad Filat.

Although affected by the economic crisis itself, Romania has offered the Republic of Moldova a 100-million euro non-reimbursable loan, an accord regarding small border traffic, which concerns more than one million people, and five inter-ministerial agreeemnts, in fields ranging from education to constructions. During Ghimpu's recent visit to Bucharest, Romanian President Traian Basescu reiterated the offer to connect Moldova’s railway infrastructure and power grid to the Romanian ones and, implicitly, to those of the EU. In an interview on Radio Romania, Moldovan President Mihai Ghimpu said:

''All this demonstrates that Romania only wants the best for us and does not put forth any claims, as was the case of the former (Moldovan) Communist government which tried to keep Romanians on both sides of the border apart. But blood is thicker than water and no matter how much one would try to keep brothers apart, the day comes when one of them or both see through the lie.''

Presidents Basescu and Ghimpu also signed a joint declaration, putting in place a strategic partnership for Chishinau’s European integration. Prime minister Vlad Filat admitted that he relied on Bucharest’s backing in the bid to lead the republic towards European structures. Filat insisted that:

''The European option does not only belong to the leading political class, but also to the Republic's citizens. I hope that in 10 years’ time, we will be together within the space of the European community, where there are no borders and no frontiers. I am absolutely positive that during this period of time, many biases relating to identity, will disappear, which now are still alive in mentalities in the Republic of Moldova.''
