The Canadian Rosia Montana Gold Corporation plans to engage in the exploitation of gold and silver ores in the area, which are considered to be the richest in Europe. This town nestled in the Western Carpathians has a history of gold exploitation going back as far as the pre-Roman era, that is about 1900 years ago. The Canadians hope to obtain more than 300 tons of gold and 1400 tons of silver, worth more than 7.5 billion dollars.

The company has already invested 400 million dollars in the area, out of a total sum expected to reach almost 2 billion. But the extraction has yet to begin. The project has fallen through after the state intervened, following a wave of protests from NGO's, warning about the tremendous ecological and heritage damage one of the country’s most picturesque areas might suffer . Cyanides that are expected to be used in the process are ecologists’ main target. Other local associations, however, back the project, and bring economic and social arguments: the creation of 2300 jobs for the building of the mine and 900 during the exploitation proper. An impact study was submitted in 2006, but its assessment was suspended after a year.

Three years later, the gold and silver exploitation project in Rosia Montana was evaluated in situ by environment minister Laszlo Borbely and culture minister Kelemen Hunor. They claim that, if Gold Corporation investors can demonstrate that the project is 100% non-polluting, and that neither the state nor the local inhabitants are be affected, the impact study will reach the government's table.

The two ministers have met both supporters and opposers of the project, and talks focused on environment protection, heritage protection and local economic development, without ignoring the jobs or the properties of those people who are not willing to give them up in order to make room for the mine. The project was redesigned by the company and in order to be implemented, the entire bureaucratic process must resume. As environment minister Borbely said, the final decision will not be political, but technical, taking into account the safety of exploitation works. If it receives the green light, the Canadian investor will bear the entire financial liability for any subsequent ecological rehabilitation.
