Raluca-Ioana van Staden won the Golden Trophy of the World Intellectual Property Organisation for Best Woman Investor. She received the trophy for inventing a sensor that detects cancer in the human body, at molecular level, in less than 6 minutes. The inventor says cancer can be detected before the patient shows the symptoms of the disease, which is a great advantage because it allows cancer to be treated successfully if discovered early. Experiments have been conducted on various types of cancer: ovarian, breast, gastrointestinal and of the prostate. Raluca-Ioana van Staden said that, when the device is produced on large scale, it will be easily used by doctors and nurses. The project was prepared in Timisoara, in the west, the only process analysis technology lab in Romania.
Another Romanian, Corneliu Birtok Baneasa got the silver for a dynamic device for air transfer which reduces fuel consumption and polluting emissions. His invention also won the gold in 2009 at the Inventica International Exhibition hosted by Poland and the silver at the International Show in Brussels. At last year’s edition of the Geneva Show he got the silver for inventing the inversed super-absorbent filters, which, if mounted on a car, reduces fuel consumption by 15%.
Another Romanian invention, an automated lubricating system made by a team of experts and now used by a Hydro-power Plant in Romania, was awarded the gold medal. The system also received a prize in 2009 at the International Inventions Show in Brussels. The strengths of the device are its simplicity, great safety in exploitation, high reliability and its large scale use for various types of industrial applications.
Also in Geneva, a former TV presenter, Andreea Marin Banica, received the gold for her innovation called Violet, an extensible baby bodysuit named after her daughter.
The 38th edition of the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions gathered as many as 1,000 inventions presented by 785 inventors from 45 countries.
