On Sunday, boxer Lucian Bute managed to defend his title of super-middleweight world champion, IBF version. In a match held in Montreal, the Romanian only needed three rounds to get the better of Colombian contender Edison Miranda, thus keeping his world number one position. Bute caught his adversary off-guard with a left uppercut to the chin, which sent the Colombian to the floor for the first and last time in the game. In an exclusive interview given to Radio Romania, Lucian Bute said:

“I was very well prepared. I trained for two months with coach Stephane Larouche in Florida. I studied my adversary very well and got the result I wanted. I worked a lot on that left uppercut, and it came out well. I stuck with my game strategy. I thank all of you who supported me.”

30-year-old Bute has so far performed in 26 matches, that results in all victories and no defeats for the Romanian athletes. Even more notable is that 21 of these matches were won by knockout. Bute first made an impression in 1997, when he won his first national junior title. One year later, he defended his title, and won the bronze at the World Championships in Buenos Aires. In 1999, he earned another bronze, this time at the senior's World Championships in Houston. He turned professional in 2004. He became super-middleweight world champion, IBF version, in 2007, when he defeated Colombian Alejandro Berrio through technical knockout. Since then, he has defended his title on several occasions.

The other major sporting performance recorded this past weekend came from handball. The Romanian women's team Oltchim Ramnicu Valcea has qualified for the Champions League final, after defeating ETO Gyor of Hungary in the previous round. This is for the first time since the European Champions Cup took on a new name and format, and became the Champions League that a Romanian team has managed to reach the final. In Ramnicu Valcea, Radu Voina's girls won 24 to 20, after the first leg had ended in a 25-all draw. Here is what coach Radu Voina had to say:

“I believe the girls got a great result, and showed that they have class. What's most important is that we qualified. We got this far, and hope to go on and give handball fans an even bigger reason to celebrate.”

In the final, Oltchim will face the current trophy holders, Viborg from Denmark. The two teams have gone up against each other in the current season before. Oltchim won at home with the score 27-26, but lost away 33-26.
