MORE SOCIAL PROTESTS 12/04/2010 |
(2010-04-12) |
Last updated: 2010-04-14 9:26 EET |
Education trade unions in Romania have started the week with a fresh series of protests. The representatives of the Federation of Free Trade Unions in Education have decided to picket the government and education ministry buildings and say their protests will continue by the end of the month. Teachers are unhappy that their incomes have dropped and that approximately 17,000 education employees are to be made redundant in September.
A poll among the members of the Federation of Free Trade Unions is to be held by April 30th on which teachers are asked whether they agree to going on an all-out strike in June. A possible all-out strike in the first part of the month would block the entire school year. On the other hand, teachers in the south-eastern county of Buzau, who started an all-out strike in mid March to protest against the fact that they did not receive the 33% bonuses they earned in court, went back to work. During their 4-week strike, teachers took to the street to stage protests and rallies and picket the prefect’s office and the county school Inspectorate.
Over 4,000 teachers from Buzau as well as representatives of pre-university education from 15 other counties took part in the protests. The employees of the land registration office protested in front of several county offices, unhappy that their salary incomes dropped in February and that they are no longer paid for overtime. The employees of the land registration office have announced that, starting this week, they will extend the deadlines for processing documents, which will mainly affect the First House government-run programme for young people who do not have a place to live.
