On Thursday, the Romanian president, Traian Basescu, attended a state dinner offered by the US President Barack Obama. The dinner was held a few hours after the signing of the new START nuclear disarmament treaty by the presidents of the US and Russia, Barack Obama and Dmitri Medvedev respectively. The Romanian President has stated that the new agreement is a step forward towards ensuring the security of Europe and of other parts of the world. In another move, President Basescu has stressed that, to Romania, as a European country, it’s essential that the relationship between the US and Russia grow solid and motivated by the present day reality. In Afghanistan, NATO should maintain its solidarity, and the member states must take their fair share of responsibility. As for Iran, in Romania’s view, diplomacy and economic sanctions are far more effective than military solutions, so that Teheran be forced to show transparency with regard to its nuclear program.
The Romanian education law, which has been repeatedly and fundamentally changed in the past 20 years, is still the bone of contention between government and opposition. The liberals and the social – democrats filed a simple motion called ‘Education, from survival to collapse’ to draw attention to the fact that the situation in the Romanian education system has become worse, due to the current government’s lack of strategic vision, transparency and managerial skills. The Education Minister, Daniel Funeriu, announced on Thursday, following several rounds of negotiations with the education trade unions, that the latest version of the law would be submitted to government on Monday. The draft education law has been debated publicly for three weeks. If the draft law passes, it will be sent to parliament.
After one week of protests, family doctors in Romania have started to issue free and subsidised prescriptions again, as well as medical leave of absence letters. The decision was made after their representatives signed an agreement with the National Health Insurance House, as a result of many rounds of negotiations. Family doctors stopped issuing prescriptions and medical leave of absence letters to protest against some of the provisions of the frame-work agreement regarding the provision of medical services in 2010, which was supposed to take effect on April 1st.
The past week saw a first in Romania: the Higher Council of Magistrates said yes to the temporary arrest of a judge. Florin Costiniu, the head of the civil law department of the High Court of Cassation and Justice was detained by prosecutors with the National Anti-corruption Directorate, who are investigating him for complicity to influence peddling in the file involving another three persons: a social democratic senator and two business people. The senator is accused of influence peddling and forgery.
The Brukenthal Art and History Museum in Sibiu, one of the most important cultural institutions in Romania, is one of the 29 winners of the 2010 European Heritage Awards, representing 15 countries. The awards are granted by the international organisation Europa Nostra and the European Commission for heritage preservation, research and education. The Bruckental Museum was awarded in the section ‘Education, training and awareness raising’ for its pedagogical program for students. The awards ceremony will be held on June 10th in Istanbul, which is a European capital of culture in 2010.
On April 7th, 30 towns and cities in Romania and the neighbouring Republic of Moldova hosted events remembering a year since the anti-communist protests in Chisinau, which were violently repressed by the then authorities. Young people got to the streets to protest against the rigging of the April 5th election. PM Vlad Filat has stated that that revolt opened the path to democracy, and April 7th is the day when Moldovan citizens became free. Mihai Ghimpu, the acting president of the Republic of Moldova, which is a former Soviet state with a predominantly Romanian speaking population, has stated that the way in which the police acted back then, arresting and torturing people, was a disgrace.
