Summer has come very early this year and brought scorching days with it. Crops have been damaged to a worrying extent especially in the south of the country. Farmers, who are on the verge of despair, cannot remember when was the last time it rained. Most of them farmers cannot afford to spend too much on irrigation, despite government aid for irrigation.

They can only live with the terrifying thought that soon there will be no food left for themselves and their animals. Not to mention that it is now out of the question selling their products to supplement their small income. There are villages where wells have dried out completely, so there are people who don’t even have water to drink. In the city, ambulances are barely coping with the high number of emergency calls from people affected by heat. The heat has also made victims, especially among the older population.

Meteorologists warn that temperatures will soar even more. They are forecasting 38 degrees Celsius towards the end of the week and say that the degree of thermal discomfort caused by the heat-humidity ratio will be reached. Temperatures are even likely to exceed 40 degrees Celsius in Bucharest. According to specialists from the National Meteorology Institute, pollution boosts the impact of temperatures on the human body, as does heat emanating from the pavements. So when it’s 30 degrees out there, city dwellers actually feel like its 45 degrees. The authorities are setting up first-aid points in crowded urban areas, where free water will be distributed.

Streets will be sprinkled with water several times a day, and fountains will run round the clock. According to the daily Curentul, some pools will stay open until late at night and even till morning to help counteract the effects of this infernal week. The daily Ziua headlines “Balls of fire in June”, and Jurnalul National warns: “one more week of dog days.” Evenimentul Zilei looks ahead at the coming months under the headline “Red alarm - two months of fire”. Apparently, the whole summer will be about suffocating heat, fires and draught.
