ROMANIAN FILM AWARDS 30/03/10
(2010-03-30)

The film actually grabbed the most important trophies handed out on that occasion: the best leading actor (Dragos Bucur), the best supporting actor (Vlad Ivanov) and the best photography (Marius Panduru). “I think we won too many prizes. There have been a lot of good films, which didn’t make it in the competition. I hope we will be able to keep producing films in the future as well,” director Corneliu Porumboiu said.

Since 2007, the Gopo Awards have been offered to the best Romanian films released in the previous year, and are intended to promote national cinematography values among the general public. Organised by the Association for Romanian Film Promotion, with support from the National Cinematography Center, the event honours the memory of the famed Romanian filmmaker Ion Popescu Gopo, who won the 1957 Palme D’Or for his short-reel film “A brief history.” Oana Rasuceanu, coordinator of the Gopo Awards, is optimistic with respect to the future of the Romanian film industry, and hopes the event will contribute to getting it acknowledged at home and abroad.

“We would like as many Romanians as possible to become more familiar with the works of Romanian filmmakers, to realise that Romanian films are worth seeing. We have reasons to believe that 2010 will be a spectacular year in terms of film premieres, just like 2009, which was also a good year. As many as 16 films were released, 12 of which have been nominated for the Gopo Awards. We strongly believe the Romanian film needs the appreciation of the foreign audiences and critics, but also, and even more importantly, it needs the appreciation of the Romanian audience.”

The Gopo Awards carry on the tradition of honouring great personalities of the Romanian cinema industry. Draga Olteanu-Matei, one of the most popular Romanian actresses, having played in 90 feature films, was the one to receive a life-time achievement award at the latest edition of the event.

“I am thrilled, because I have known the great filmmaker Ion Popescu Gopo personally. And the fact that this award bears his name makes it an honour for everybody. This award came as a surprise for me, and it makes me very happy. I am quite impressed.”

Another life-time achievement award was offered to script writer, professor and theorist Dumitru Carabat, author of such works as “Tentative poetics of film screenplay” and “Studies on film typology.”
