Besides Bucharest’s older intention to buy fuel for its nuclear reactors in Cernavoda, in south eastern Romania, from Kazakhstan, the world’s largest producer of uranium, another important objective of President Basescu’s visit to Kazakhstan was to get this state involved in the three-party Azerbaijan-Georgia-Romania project related to the transit of crude oil and natural gas to Europe. It is this area, in fact, that has seen the biggest investment from a company from Kazakhstan, namely KazMunaiGas, which, over the past three years, has purchased all shares in Rompetrol.
After meeting his Romanian counterpart in Astana, the Kazakh president, Nursultan Nazarbaev, recalled that Romania was an important economic partner of his country in Central and Eastern Europe. He invited Romanian companies to participate in the industrial development of Kazakhstan. Nursultan Nazarbaev:
“Kazakhstan is ready to cooperate with your country in several domains, from energy to trade. We also urge your companies to participate in the industrial development of Kazakhstan”.
The development of bilateral relations is beneficial to both countries, said President Traian Basescu, recalling that Romania could benefit from Kazakhstan’s energy resources and also contribute to this country’s industrial development:
“Romania perfectly understands Kazakhstan’s need to export to the huge EU market, a market of 500 million citizens. That is why the partnership we will establish with Kazakhstan related to the use of the Romanian infrastructure, whether in the port of Constanta, the railway and road networks, or the Danube river, which crosses the EU territory, is a solution for the Kazakh products to penetrate the EU market.”
In the city of Karaganda, President Traian Basescu met representatives of the Romanian community. He promised them that Bucharest would send teachers to set up a Sunday school within the Romanian Embassy teaching in the Romanian language. In Spassk, Traian Basescu visited the monument devoted to the more than 900 Romanian soldiers taken prisoner during WWII and to the victims of communist repressions.
