Romanian Defense Minister Corneliu Dobritoiu attended the meeting of the NATO Defense Ministers, held in Brussels. The Romanian official announced Romania would take part in NATO operations in Afghanistan also after armed forces would have been withdrawn at the end of 2014. As of 2015, the current allied mission will turn into an advisory and training program aimed to provide assistance to Afghan security forces, while Romania’s contribution to this mission would translate into a financial effort worth 500 thousand dollars, the minimum amount required for all NATO member states, due to the recent budget cuts.
Corneliu Dobritoiu: “We have made a number of commitments as a NATO member state, in a difficult military operations area. We stand firm in our pledge to the end, as we have started this together. Certainly, Afghan security forces need NATO’s support so as to attain a high efficiency rate”.
Minister Dobritoiu went on to say that the Alliance is experiencing a sore need to assess the contribution of each Member State so as to establish very clearly its political commitments. NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen gave assurances that by the end of 2014, when the international-led troops are bound to leave Afghanistan, there would be no military security void in that country. On the contrary, Rasmussen said the new mission deployed on the ground would ensure Afghanistan stopped being a safe haven for terrorists.
Anders Fogh Rasmussen: “We have a strong shared interest in working together to confront this threat. We and the Afghan government have together undertaken numerous measures to reduce the risk of insider attacks and no one can drive a wedge between ISAF and our Afghan partners. We remain fully committed to supporting the Afghan security forces as we transfer full security control to them by the end of 2014”.
At present NATO has a 100,000-strong military force deployed in Afghanistan. Afghan security forces have joined the fight against Taliban terrorists, who were driven away in 2001 by a US-led international military force. Throughout the ten years that followed, 20 Romanian soliders were killed, while scores of others fell victim to Taliban shelling or makeshift bombs. Southern Afghanistan continues to remain a Taliban stronghold, still ravaged by Islamist insurgencies.
Over 1,600 Romanian soldiers and several hundereds of riot police officers who are training the Afghan security forces are deployed on the ground.
